Since its foundation in 1558, the University of Jena has shaped literary epochs, established new fields of research, inspired industries, and survived political assimilation. Today, Friedrich Schiller University attracts students and researchers from all over the world. Students number around 16,500 in total, while over 2.400 students are international, representing more than 110 countries. University of Jena offers support and supervision from the beginning providing an excellent student-staff ratio. Furthermore, the promotion of early-stage researchers is of central importance.
With its 10 faculties, the University of Jena covers the broad academic canon from the natural and life sciences (including medicine) to the social sciences and humanities.
It pools its research areas into three main themes “Light, Life, Liberty” representing the proven strengths of Jena University. “Light” integrates material and energy research combining these with cutting-edge research in optics and photonics. “Life” connects microbiology and biodiversity, as well as research into ageing and sepsis. “Liberty” combines research on enlightenment and romanticism with contemporary research in the social sciences, history, and Eastern Europe.
Additionally, Jena University maintains a dense network of international collaboration with more than 500 partners worldwide and at the same time has contributed to a unique culture of close cooperation regionally with university and non-university research institutions, the University Hospital, and high-tech industry.
