Science and research in Germany are characterised by an excellent infrastructure, a wide variety of disciplines, well-equipped research facilities and competent staff. Germany offers various forms of research locations: universities, non-university institutes, companies and institutions run by federal or state (Länder) authorities.

All in all there are more than 1,000 public and publicly-funded institutions for science, research and development in Germany, joined by approx. 450 research and innovation networks and clusters and a large number of research and development centers run by companies.

Research funding in Germany is provided by government bodies, various organizations, including many of the large non-university research institutions, and industry. International PhD students and junior and senior researchers can find a wide selection of funding programs.
