How Indo-German research cooperation supported by IGSTC spawned a science start-up at IIT Madras

ChemBioSens Pvt Ltd is a spinoff R & D company from the Biosensors laboratory at IIT Madras that aims to bring out reliable sensing technologies for detecting chemical molecules and biological entities of interest in healthcare industry (clinical diagnostics and environmental monitoring), in addition to pharmaceutical and chemical industries.

The start-up was incubated at IIT Madras under the Indo-German Cooperation Project Multi-WAP (Phase 1: 2016-20). With extension in funding towards technology demonstration from 2020-2022, the project (named DEMO-Multi-WAP in Phase 2), aims to demonstrate the technology at TRL-7, to take a step closer towards commercialization.

To that effect, ChemBioSens has joined the consortium as an Indian industry partner. ChemBioSens is supported by the Indo-German Science and Technology Centre (IGSTC) with a grant-in-aid of up to 50% of the project expenses under the 2+2 Project Scheme which is the flagship programme of IGSTC to catalyse innovation-centric R&D+I projects. It aims at supporting joint R&D+I projects of industrial relevance by means of “2+2 Mode of Partnership” i.e. involvement of at least one research/academic institute and one public/private industry from both India and Germany.
