Alexander von Humboldt Foundation

The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (AvH) promotes academic cooperation between excellent scientists and scholars from abroad and from Germany. To this end, it grants more than 700 research fellowships and research awards annually. These allow researchers from all over the world to come to Germany to work on a research question they have chosen themselves together with a host and collaborative partner.

There are no quotas, neither for individual countries, nor for particular academic disciplines. The selection committees comprise academics from all disciplines and they make independent decisions, based solely on the applicant’s academic record. The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation supports people, not projects.

Once a Humboldtian, always a Humboldtian. Even after the stay in Germany has come to an end, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation maintains close links with their alumni. The alumni sponsorship is tailored to the needs of every single Humboldtian, providing flexible support for the particular development and path in life as well as for cooperation with others.

As an intermediary organisation for German foreign cultural and educational policy the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation promotes international cultural dialogue and academic exchange. The Foundation’s work helps to promote the internationalisation and appeal of Germany as a research location, enhances its visibility and strengthens its position in global competition.

The Indian alumni network is one of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation’s largest worldwide and currently comprises approximately 1,400 Humboldtians, many of whom are active in self-founded alumni associations. There are 17 Humboldt Alumni Associations in India which are actively involved in the development of the Humboldt Alumni network.

The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation’s Ambassador Scientists disseminate information about Germany as a research location at universities and research institutions in Germany and abroad, focusing particularly on the Foundation’s sponsorship programmes and international network. In India the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation is represented by four Ambassador Scientists.
